Cable Driven vs Limb Driven Arrow Rest: Which Should You Run?

Should you run a cable driven or a limb driven arrow rest? We install and tune both styles here at the shop every single day, and if you ask me point blank which one I'd choose on a hunting bow, I'm probably going limb driven — and accuracy isn't even the reason why.

Both systems can be incredibly reliable and accurate. Neither one is inherently more accurate than the other — they're just two different ways of solving the same problem. Let's look at how each one actually works so you can figure out which fits your setup.

How Each System Actually Works

Cable Driven — Timing-Based Activation

Two of the most popular options we sell here are the AAE Prophet I and the QAD MX2. Both are integration-style arrow rests, which I prefer on hunting bows because they play nice with low-profile quivers. Once it's mounted and leveled, you run an activation cable off the bow's cable — either through the split cable or with the attachment piece the rest comes with. When you draw the bow back, you get tension on that activation cable. When you release the arrow, the tension comes off and drops the launcher out of the way.

This is exactly why timing is so critical on a cable driven rest. If it's not timed correctly and the launcher doesn't fall away like it's supposed to, you're going to get arrow contact — that means inconsistent flight downrange, or you'll end up ripping the vanes right off your arrows. Get it installed and timed properly, though, and these things are incredibly durable and reliable.

Limb Driven — Activation Off the Limb

Limb driven rests use the same low-profile integration mounting, but you'll notice a long cord running down to the bottom limb or top limb depending on the rest. The launcher sits down when the bow is at rest, comes up as you draw back, and the limb itself pulls the launcher out of the way the instant you release. There's no timing requirement — as long as that cord is set correctly (typically about an inch to an inch and a half off the axle), it performs flawlessly.

From the Hamskea lineup, that's good, better, best: the Hamskea Primer is your good option, the Hamskea Everest is better, and the Hamskea R7 is the flagship — best. The big difference as you move up the line is micro-adjustability; durability stays excellent across all three, you just lose some of the more advanced features at the lower price points.

The Case for Cable Driven

Clean, Low-Profile Look

You get a short cable that integrates right into the bow's cable, so there's no long cord running down to a limb. It's a clean setup on the bow, no question.

Preset Launcher Containment

This is probably the best feature of a cable driven rest, and it's likely why they're so popular here at the shop: you can preset your launcher so the arrow is fully contained and can't bounce around and hit the riser. If you're spot-and-stalk hunting, or you're in a tree stand, your arrow just isn't going anywhere.

As far as brands, the QAD MX2 dominates sales for Hoyt and Mathews shooters since it comes in bow-branded versions, and the newer AAE Prophet has genuinely impressed me — it's tested through 400,000-plus cycles, so the durability is there. It sits in that mid-price category: you don't get the micro-adjustability of a premium rest, but it's heavy duty, robust, and something you can trust in the field.

The Case for Limb Driven

Simplicity & No Timing Required

This is the big one for me. There's no timing requirement, it's a very straightforward setup, and it's easy to spot a mechanical issue — if the bow is at rest and the launcher is up, you know something's off, and it's usually just a matter of tightening the cable.

Limb Driven Arrow Rest Tuning

The other thing I love about limb driven rests: field serviceability. If that cable were ever severed, you can replace it with basically anything you've got access to — a shoelace, the internals from 550 cord — run it back through the rest, tie it down, and you're back up and running with zero timing to worry about.

Trade-Offs to Consider

Limb Driven Downsides

The cord running to the lower limb is exposed. It's less visually clean, and there's potential for it to get snagged or severed in the field. If that bothers you, I get it — that's exactly why the cable driven option exists.

Cable Driven Downsides

You have to understand how to set it up and time it correctly, and any adjustment to draw length or draw weight can change that timing. If you're not paying attention, that's where problems start.

What Actually Goes Wrong (Common Issues We See in the Shop)

Cable Driven Problems

The most common issue is simply a rest that isn't timed correctly — the launcher doesn't fall away like it should, so you get arrow contact and ripped vanes. This can happen after any change to draw length or limb bolt poundage, since that shifts the bow's timing too. The second issue is mechanical failure: the internal hardware binds up and the launcher gets hung up or crunchy instead of falling away clean.

Limb Driven Problems

Honestly, we don't run into many problems with these. The most common one is the cord stretching or coming loose over time, so the launcher starts to creep back up. It's a quick fix — put some tension on it, stretch it back out, and re-tighten so the launcher fully seats again. You can do it on the fly. Mechanical failures on the Hamskea rests specifically have been rare, though anything mechanical can technically fail.

Who Should Go With Which?

Go limb driven if simplicity, durability, reliability, and field serviceability matter most to you and the exposed limb cord doesn't bother you. That's what pushes me toward the limb driven side of things, especially on a hunting bow — I can't preach enough on how well they function.

Go cable driven if you want the cleanest look on the bow and that preset launcher containment feature is a real selling point for how you hunt. The QAD MX2 is a great call if you're running a Hoyt or Mathews, and the AAE Prophet I is a fantastic mid-price, heavy-duty option either way.

And if you've already got a quality cable driven rest on your bow that's working perfectly fine — I'm not telling you to rip it off and replace it. Bottom Line

Neither of these systems is inherently more accurate than the other. They're two different ways of solving the same problem, and I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with either one as long as it's set up properly.

For me, on a hunting bow specifically, the simplicity, durability, and field serviceability of a limb driven rest usually wins out. But your arrow rest is only part of the equation — the right choice comes down to how you hunt and what you're comfortable maintaining in the field.
