Hybrid Arrow Build: One Arrow for Hunting & TAC

If you want one arrow you can shoot at Total Archery Challenge all summer, then screw a broadhead into it and hunt with it all fall, you need to stop chasing extreme numbers.

You don't need the lightest arrow, the heaviest, or the highest FOC you can possibly build. What you need is an arrow that does everything pretty well — and there are four numbers I pay attention to every time I build one.

Start With a 5mm Shaft

For most compound bow shooters, I'm going to start with a 5mm shaft somewhere between 420 and 450 grains total arrow weight, with an FOC of roughly 13 to 18%. If you've got a shorter draw length and lower poundage, I'll keep you closer to that 420-grain end. More draw length and more poundage gives you plenty of room to move toward — or exceed — 450 grains.

I'm not claiming a 5mm is universally the best diameter, but it's a really good middle ground. It's smaller than your standard large-diameter hunting shaft, so there's less surface area exposed to wind — less wind drift, better penetration — and there's a ton of component options in this category, with plenty of GPI and durability choices. It works well for both hunting and long-range shooting. You can always go smaller with a 4mm, or larger with a 6 or 6.5mm — those have their own advantages — but we're looking for balance here.

The Four Numbers That Matter

1. Total Arrow Weight

Here at Extreme Outfitters we like to live within that 420 to 450 grain range, but it's not a universal magic number — it depends on your draw length, draw weight, arrow spine, the efficiency of the bow itself, and the distances you plan on shooting and hunting. You need enough mass for a serious hunting setup, but not so much that your trajectory becomes a liability.

Total Archery Challenge creates real constraints here: extreme distances, sight travel, pin clearance, arrow drop. We see it every year — guys come in with arrows that work perfectly fine at normal hunting distances, but they've built them so heavy that they can't get enough travel out of their sight to reach the longer TAC or 3D distances, and they end up needing a completely different arrow.

2. FOC (Front of Center)

This is probably the most misunderstood number in arrow building right now. James Yates, Easton, Hoyt, and Precision Cut Archery have been running an aeroballistic study across 2025 and 2026, with 2026 introducing dedicated FOC testing. There's legitimate evidence that increasing FOC can improve broadhead grouping downrange — the data is there. But they did not establish one universal perfect FOC for everybody.

For a hybrid build here at the shop, we typically live within that 13 to 18% range, and it works extremely well. Increasing FOC generally means moving more mass forward, and that mass still counts toward your total arrow weight — so chasing extreme FOC gets you a heavier overall build with worse trajectory, and you often have to increase spine, which increases GPI. So while the newest testing gives legitimate reason to favor more FOC for broadhead accuracy, that doesn't mean more is automatically better. Every grain you add up front still comes out of your total weight budget.

3. GPI — the Number Everyone Forgets

GPI is grains per inch — how much weight per inch of shaft — and it's the number most people overlook. If your goal is a 430-grain finished arrow, that's your total budget: the shaft consumes part of it, and your vanes, nock, and components eat into the rest. A lower GPI shaft gives you greater freedom to move weight forward while keeping total weight under control. If you want more weight up front without ending up with an excessively heavy arrow, you've got to pay attention to what the shaft itself weighs.

Easton 5.0 — The All-Around Favorite

This is one of my favorite arrows, and I've got a lot of experience with it — I've shot it from Total Archery Challenge through hunting trips in Texas, Kentucky, and here in Eastern North Carolina. The Easton 5.0 is a newer release, within the last two years, and it's a relatively low GPI arrow in their 5.0 category — probably the best low-GPI option Easton offers for a hybrid build. Plenty of component options, and it's an excellent general-purpose arrow just because of the weight itself.

For example: my personal build was a 300 spine, cut to roughly 27.5 inches, with 50 grains of insert weight and a 100-grain point. Total arrow weight landed right around 420-422 grains at about 16.5% FOC — perfect for a hybrid build. It worked great for everything I did. I killed multiple animals with it and shot the extreme TAC distances with the same exact arrow.

Victory RIP XV — Lowest GPI Option

The Victory RIP XV is Victory's lowest GPI 5.0 option — extremely low GPI, great for preserving speed and trajectory if you've got a shorter draw length or lower poundage. The trade-off is a thinner wall, which makes it a little less durable and a bit more brittle. But if you're on that lower end of draw weight and draw length, it lets you stay within your target weight while still landing in that FOC range without ending up with an overly heavy arrow.

Victory HLR Hybrid Arrow Build

Victory HLR — The Sweet Spot

The Victory HLR falls right between the RIP XV and the RIP TKO, and along with the Easton 5.0, it's probably one of the two most popular options we see for a hybrid build. It's still a fairly low GPI shaft, so you can manipulate the build to get the right FOC and overall weight, and it's more durable than the XV with all the same good component options.

Victory RIP TKO — Most Durable

The Victory RIP TKO is probably one of the most popular shafts we sell, period. It's a little higher GPI than the other two Victory options, but it still falls in the low-GPI range for a 5.0 shaft overall — great for anyone with a longer draw length or more draw weight, since it's easy to land closer to that 450-plus grain mark without giving anything up. The durability on this thing is fantastic — it's the most durable option out of any of these 5.0 shafts we carry.

Four Mistakes We See in the Shop

Mistake #1: Chasing Extreme FOC

Adding a huge amount of point weight without ever calculating the total finished weight. The arrow ends up excessively heavy, and trajectory suffers.

Mistake #2: Chasing Extreme Speed

Everything gets sacrificed for trajectory — the build ends up excessively light, gets pushed around in the wind, and doesn't carry the momentum through an animal that a little more weight would.

Mistake #3: Ignoring Shaft GPI

Start with an already-heavy GPI shaft, and you have to stack even more weight up front to hit your FOC target — which blows past your total weight budget and costs you the trajectory and sight travel you were after.

Mistake #4: Chasing One Number Instead of a System

Whether it's a 20% FOC, 300 feet per second, or a 500-grain arrow — none of these numbers by themselves make a great arrow. Every arrow is a system. Change one number, and you're changing something else.

Who Should Buy What?

Shorter draw length, lower poundage: stay closer to 420 grains, maybe even below it. That's where a lower-GPI shaft like the RIP XV really becomes valuable, so you're not handicapping your trajectory.

Average compound setup — standard 27" to 30" draw, 70 to 80 pounds: anywhere in that 420 to 450 grain range works well for you. The Easton 5.0 and the HLR are natural middle grounds. Run a 100-grain head with roughly 50 to 75 grains of insert weight and you'll land right in that 13 to 18% FOC and 420-450 grain sweet spot without much trouble.

Extreme long draw length or high poundage (something like an AX 90): you can go with a little more GPI, like the RIP TKO, and get the added durability that comes with it since you're already shooting an arrow faster. Check out the full Easton lineup and Victory lineup to see all your options.

We're not trying to put everybody into the exact same arrow — we're trying to arrive at the same performance philosophy using components that make sense for your bow. Guys are successfully hunting everything from East Coast whitetail to elk out west in this general weight range. That doesn't mean 440 grains is somehow the perfect elk arrow for everybody — it just means you don't automatically need a completely different 500-plus grain arrow just because you're hunting bigger game.

Bottom Line

The best hybrid arrow isn't going to win any single category. It's probably not the fastest arrow, the heaviest, the highest FOC, or even the most indestructible one you could build. That's the point. We're trying to get enough trajectory to shoot Total Archery Challenge, enough durability and weight to hunt confidently, and enough FOC to get the broadhead performance we're after downrange.
