Our Take on the Victory Rival X
The Rival X is interesting because it does not fit neatly into the normal 4mm, 5mm, or standard-diameter categories. Victory built it around a .225" internal diameter, and that middle-ground size gives the shaft a pretty unique personality.
For us, the biggest advantage is build flexibility. The GPI stays relatively low, but you still start with a 30-grain stainless insert and have the ability to add a 20-grain backweight when the finished build calls for it.
We tested a 300-spine Rival X cut to 29" carbon-to-carbon. With the 20-grain backweight installed, the finished shaft and component package came in around 333 grains before the point. Add a 100-grain point and you are right around 433 grains finished.
That is a really useful weight range for someone who wants a fast hunting or 3D arrow without going excessively light.
If you remove that additional 20 grains, you can move the build even further toward speed and flatter trajectory. If you want more front-end mass, Victory’s additional backweight options give you room to move the other direction.
That is why we see the Rival X making a lot of sense for TAC and 3D shooters. When targets stretch out and yardage estimation becomes harder, a flatter trajectory and smaller pin gaps can give you a little more margin for error.
It can absolutely work as a hunting arrow as well. We simply would not choose it because of generic claims about maximum penetration or kinetic energy. We would choose it because the shaft weight, diameter, and adjustable component system fit the finished arrow we are trying to build.
The biggest limitation is that the Rival X does not have the same depth of heavy component options that some more established 5mm platforms offer. If someone’s goal is an extremely heavy, high-FOC hunting build, there are other arrow systems we would likely consider first.
But if the priority is versatility, speed, flatter trajectory, and enough component flexibility to build a practical hunting arrow, the Rival X fills a very useful spot in the lineup.
