Easton Axis 5mm vs FMJ Max: Which Hunting Arrow Should You Choose?

The Easton Axis 5mm and FMJ Max look very similar on paper. They're both small-diameter 5mm hunting shafts, their GPI is extremely close in several common spines, and both give you access to Easton's 5mm component system.

The real difference is construction. The Axis is an all-carbon hunting shaft. The FMJ Max uses a carbon core wrapped in a 7075 aluminum jacket. That changes the way I would choose between them much more than a few tenths of a grain per inch ever will.

Easton Axis 5mm vs FMJ Max: The Quick Answer

If durability, simplicity and an all-carbon shaft are at the top of my list, I lean toward the Axis 5mm.

If I specifically want Easton's carbon-and-aluminum FMJ construction, extremely easy target removal and a shaft that sits between traditional FMJ weight and many lighter all-carbon options, I look harder at the FMJ Max.

What I would not do is tell somebody the FMJ Max automatically penetrates better or the Axis is indestructible.

They're both very capable hunting arrows. The better choice comes down to which construction and trade-offs fit what you're trying to build.

My simple way to think about it:

Axis 5mm: proven all-carbon durability.

FMJ Max: FMJ carbon/aluminum construction without as much shaft weight as the traditional 5mm FMJ.

Easton Axis 5mm

Construction: All-carbon Acu-Carbon shaft

Best for: Durability-focused hunting builds

Main advantage: Proven all-carbon toughness

Main trade-off: More shaft weight than lighter 5mm platforms like the Easton 5.0

Easton FMJ Max

Construction: Acu-Carbon core with 7075 aluminum jacket

Best for: Hunters who specifically want FMJ construction in a more weight-conscious platform

Main advantage: FMJ construction with less shaft mass than traditional FMJ in common comparable spines

Main trade-off: The aluminum jacket can permanently bend

What's Actually Different Between the Axis 5mm and FMJ Max?

The big difference is the material around the outside of the shaft.

The Axis is all carbon.

The FMJ Max starts with an Easton Acu-Carbon core and adds a precision aluminum jacket around the outside.

That aluminum jacket is what makes an FMJ an FMJ.

Where I think people get this comparison wrong is assuming the metal jacket automatically means the FMJ Max is heavier, tougher or better at penetration.

It's not that simple.

The Max was specifically designed to remove some of the shaft weight associated with the traditional 5mm FMJ. In several common spines, its GPI is extremely close to the Axis.

So the decision really becomes less about weight and more about which construction you prefer.

Axis 5mm vs FMJ Max GPI: They're Closer Than You Might Think

If you only looked at the names, you might assume the FMJ Max is substantially heavier.

In the common 300, 340 and 400 spines, that's not really the case.

300 spine: Axis 5mm — 10.7 GPI | FMJ Max — 10.3 GPI

340 spine: Axis 5mm — 9.5 GPI | FMJ Max — 9.8 GPI

400 spine: Axis 5mm — 9.0 GPI | FMJ Max — 9.0 GPI

That is close enough that GPI alone wouldn't decide this comparison for me.

A few tenths of a grain per inch can affect finished weight, but component choices can easily move the complete arrow more than the shaft difference does.

For example, changing from a lightweight HIT insert to a heavier stainless insert or half-out can move finished weight much more than the difference between these two shafts.

Don't choose these two based on GPI alone.

In the common hunting spines they're close enough that construction, components and your intended use matter more.

Durability: This Is Where I Lean Axis

If somebody comes into the shop and tells me durability is the number-one priority, I lean toward the Axis.

That's not because the FMJ Max is a weak arrow.

It's because the two shafts fail differently.

The Axis is an all-carbon shaft. Carbon can obviously crack, splinter or become damaged, so it still needs to be inspected after hard impacts.

The FMJ Max adds an aluminum jacket, and aluminum introduces a different failure mode: it can permanently bend.

Once an FMJ shaft is bent, that's not something I'm going to keep shooting.

If an FMJ Max takes a hard impact, misses a target, gets stepped on or starts acting strange in flight, spin it and inspect it.

The same basic rule applies to the Axis: inspect the shaft after any questionable impact.

But if I'm choosing between the two specifically because toughness is my highest priority, the all-carbon Axis gets the edge for me.

Where the FMJ Max Has a Very Real Advantage: Target Pull

This sounds like a minor detail until you've spent an entire day pulling arrows out of dense foam.

The aluminum exterior of the FMJ Max is extremely slick.

In hard 3D targets and especially cold foam, the difference can be very noticeable.

The FMJ tends to come out of those targets easier than a raw carbon shaft.

I wouldn't buy the FMJ Max solely because it is easier to pull from targets, but if you shoot a lot of 3D or practice constantly, it's absolutely a legitimate benefit.

Does the FMJ Max Penetrate Better?

I would not make that claim based on the aluminum jacket alone.

The metal exterior does create a slick shaft surface, but hunting penetration is the result of the complete arrow system.

Finished arrow mass, momentum, broadhead design, tune, shot placement and impact angle all matter.

If you build an Axis and an FMJ Max to nearly identical total weights and shoot them from the same bow, I would not tell somebody the aluminum jacket automatically gives the FMJ Max a meaningful hunting advantage.

That's exactly the kind of feature I think gets oversold in arrow marketing.

Choose the FMJ Max because you want the FMJ construction and the way the complete arrow builds out — not because somebody promised the metal jacket would make it pass through everything.

Components: Both Give You Plenty of Ways to Build the Front End

Both arrows live inside Easton's 5mm ecosystem, which gives you a lot of component flexibility.

The Axis has a long history with Easton's HIT insert system, and Match Grade shafts now have collar options available as well.

The FMJ Max can also be built around HIT-style internal components and collars, or with heavier half-out options depending on what you're trying to accomplish.

For the FMJ Max specifically, there are 55-, 75- and 100-grain half-out options available.

The thing you have to remember is that the front-end weight affects more than finished mass.

As you add more weight up front, you dynamically weaken the shaft.

So don't pick a spine from the manufacturer chart and then assume you can keep adding insert or broadhead weight without considering what it does to the arrow.

Real-World Use: Where I Think Each Arrow Fits

The Axis has been around long enough that we've built an enormous number of them through the shop.

For somebody who wants a straightforward, durable 5mm hunting arrow, it's still one of the easiest shafts for me to recommend.

The FMJ Max is more specific.

I think it makes the most sense for the hunter who already likes the FMJ concept but doesn't want all the shaft weight of the traditional 5mm FMJ.

That's really where the Max changed the formula.

It gives you the carbon core and aluminum exterior while bringing the GPI down enough to fit into more modern hunting builds where trajectory and finished weight still matter.

Choose the Axis 5mm If...

  • Durability is one of your highest priorities.
  • You prefer an all-carbon shaft.
  • You want a proven general-purpose hunting platform.
  • You don't want to worry about an aluminum jacket permanently bending.
  • You like Easton's HIT component system.
  • You want a shaft we've built and hunted with for years.

Choose the FMJ Max If...

  • You specifically want FMJ carbon-and-aluminum construction.
  • You like the slick aluminum exterior.
  • You shoot a lot of dense or cold foam targets.
  • You want less shaft weight than a traditional FMJ in comparable common spines.
  • You want multiple front-end component weight options.
  • You understand and accept that aluminum can permanently bend.

Bottom Line

The Axis 5mm and FMJ Max are close enough in common spine weights that I wouldn't let GPI decide this one.

The decision is really about construction.

The Axis is the all-carbon option. It has a long track record, excellent durability and is still one of the easiest general-purpose hunting arrows for me to recommend.

The FMJ Max gives you something different: a carbon core wrapped in aluminum, easier target removal, and FMJ construction without carrying as much shaft weight as the traditional FMJ in common comparable spines.

The trade-off is that aluminum can bend.

I wouldn't choose the FMJ Max because somebody told you it automatically penetrates better, and I wouldn't choose the Axis because somebody told you it's indestructible.

Choose the construction that fits how you use your arrows, get the spine right, build the front end correctly, and judge the entire system.
