Easton FMJ Max Review: Weight, Durability, Components & Real-World Performance
The Easton FMJ Max takes one of Easton's most recognizable hunting-arrow designs and solves one of the biggest issues some shooters have with a traditional FMJ: weight.
You still get the carbon core and aluminum jacket that make an FMJ different from an all-carbon arrow, but Easton brought the GPI down enough to give us more freedom with speed, trajectory and front-end weight. That doesn't automatically make the FMJ Max better than every other 5mm shaft. It just gives us a different tool to build around.

Easton FMJ Max: The Quick Answer
If you like the idea of an FMJ but the traditional 5mm FMJ is heavier than you want, the FMJ Max is probably the one I'd look at first.
The big difference is GPI. Easton reduced shaft weight while keeping the carbon-core and aluminum-jacket construction.
That gives you more room to decide where you want the finished weight.
You can use the weight savings to preserve more speed and trajectory, or you can move some of that weight back into the front of the arrow with inserts, half-outs or broadheads.
Where the FMJ Max Is Strong
Best for: Hunters who want FMJ construction without going as heavy as a traditional 5mm FMJ.
Main advantage: Lower GPI gives you more finished-weight flexibility.
Other benefit: The aluminum exterior makes these noticeably easier to pull from a lot of dense foam targets.
What You Need to Consider
Weight: It's lighter than traditional FMJ, but still heavier than many all-carbon 5mm shafts.
Construction: The aluminum jacket can permanently bend if it takes the wrong impact.
Bottom line: Choose it because you specifically want what the FMJ construction and weight range give you.
What Is the Easton FMJ Max?
The FMJ Max is a small-diameter 5mm hunting arrow built with Easton's Acu-Carbon core wrapped in a 7075 aluminum alloy jacket.
That's the defining feature of the Full Metal Jacket platform.
Instead of being an all-carbon shaft like an Axis or Easton 5.0, you're getting two materials working together in the shaft construction.
Where the Max changes the formula is weight.
Easton brought the GPI down compared with the traditional 5mm FMJ, which makes the arrow a lot easier to fit into modern builds where hunters still want enough trajectory and sight travel.
It's available in 200, 250, 300, 340 and 400 spine options, so there's enough range there to cover most modern compound setups.

FMJ Max GPI and Why the Weight Matters
The thing I would pay the most attention to with this arrow is the GPI.
Current FMJ Max shaft weights are:
200 spine: 13.3 GPI
250 spine: 11.3 GPI
300 spine: 10.3 GPI
340 spine: 9.8 GPI
400 spine: 9.0 GPI
Those aren't ultra-light numbers, and that's important.
The FMJ Max isn't trying to be an Easton 5.0.
You're still dealing with a relatively substantial hunting shaft. The difference is that you don't have as much shaft weight to work around as you do with the traditional FMJ.
Lower GPI gives you options.
You can use the weight savings to keep the finished arrow lighter, or you can put some of it back into the front of the arrow without letting total weight get away from you.
FMJ Max vs Traditional FMJ: What's Actually Different?
This is probably the most important comparison to understand.
The FMJ Max didn't replace the basic idea of the Full Metal Jacket arrow. It changed where that arrow fits from a weight standpoint.
Take a 300 spine as an example.
5mm FMJ Max — 300 Spine
10.3 GPI
Traditional 5mm FMJ — 300 Spine
12.0 GPI
That's a difference of 1.7 grains for every inch of shaft.
On a 28-inch arrow, you're talking about roughly 48 grains of shaft weight before we even start changing components.
That's enough to noticeably change how you can approach the build.
If your goal is intentionally building a really heavy hunting arrow, the traditional FMJ still has a place.
If you like the FMJ construction but want more freedom with the finished weight, that's where the FMJ Max becomes more appealing.
HIT Inserts, Collars and Half-Out Options
One thing Easton did right with the FMJ Max is give us several ways to build the front end.
The shaft works with Easton's 5mm 8-32 HIT insert system, and Easton also offers 55, 75 and 100-grain half-out options.
Match Grade shafts also include a spine-specific HIT collar.
That matters because there isn't one front-end setup that makes sense for everybody.
Some shooters may want to keep the front end relatively light and take advantage of the FMJ Max's reduced GPI. Somebody else might want to use the lower shaft weight to add more insert or broadhead weight without ending up with a finished arrow that's too heavy for their bow.
The thing you still have to watch is spine.
As you add weight to the front of the arrow, you dynamically weaken the shaft. So don't pick a spine from the chart and then assume you can add unlimited point weight without changing anything.

Does the FMJ Max Give You More FOC?
Potentially, but I want to be careful with how we say that.
The FMJ Max isn't automatically a high-FOC arrow.
What the lower GPI does is give you more room in the total weight budget to move mass forward.
That's different.
If I save weight in the shaft, I can potentially add more insert or broadhead weight and still land at the finished-arrow weight I'm looking for.
But I don't think you should chase FOC just because you can.
The complete system still matters: spine, total weight, trajectory, broadhead flight and the bow you're shooting.
One Underrated FMJ Advantage: Target Pull
This sounds like a small thing until you've spent a day shooting dense foam targets.
One of the nice things about the aluminum exterior on an FMJ is how easily the shaft tends to pull from foam compared with a lot of raw carbon shafts.
If you shoot a lot of 3D, practice regularly, or you've ever fought an arrow out of a hard target, you'll notice it.
It's not the reason I would choose the FMJ Max, but it is a legitimate quality-of-life advantage.
FMJ Max Durability: The Aluminum Trade-Off
This is the part of FMJ construction that I think deserves more explanation than it usually gets.
The FMJ Max is not an arrow I would describe as indestructible or "bombproof."
It's still an arrow, and it still needs to be inspected like any other shaft.
The biggest thing to understand is that the aluminum jacket can bend.
Carbon behaves differently. A carbon shaft can obviously be damaged, crack or splinter, but aluminum can take an impact and stay permanently bent.
Once an FMJ is bent, that's not something I would continue shooting.
So whenever an FMJ takes a hard hit, misses a target, impacts something solid, or just starts acting strange in flight, spin it and inspect it before putting it back in the quiver.
The FMJ Max durability conversation is about trade-offs.
You get the carbon-aluminum construction and a slick exterior, but you also accept that aluminum can permanently bend. If your biggest priority is a carbon shaft that takes a lot of hard abuse, I'd look carefully at the Axis instead.
Where We See the FMJ Max Fit in the Shop
The customers I think this arrow makes the most sense for are the ones who already understand why they want an FMJ.
Maybe they've shot traditional FMJs for years but want to bring some weight out of the shaft.
Maybe they're building a heavier whitetail or elk arrow but don't want to end up excessively heavy once they add their insert and broadhead.
Or maybe they simply prefer the feel and construction of the FMJ platform but want something that fits better with modern bows and longer-range shooting.
That's where the Max makes sense to me.
I wouldn't move somebody into it because "FMJ" automatically means more penetration or because aluminum is automatically better than carbon.
I'd move them into it because the construction, GPI and component system fit the arrow we're actually trying to build.

FMJ Max vs Axis 5mm: The Short Version
The Axis and FMJ Max are both 5mm Easton hunting shafts, but I wouldn't choose between them based on diameter because they're trying to do different things.
The Axis is an all-carbon hunting shaft with a long track record for durability.
The FMJ Max gives you the carbon-core and aluminum-jacket construction with a little more overall shaft mass than many all-carbon options, but less weight than the traditional FMJ.
If maximum durability and avoiding the possibility of permanently bending an aluminum jacket are higher priorities, I'd lean Axis.
If you specifically want the FMJ construction and like where the Max falls from a GPI standpoint, then the FMJ Max makes more sense.

Who Should Shoot the Easton FMJ Max?
The FMJ Max Makes a Lot of Sense If...
- You already like FMJ construction but want less shaft weight.
- You want a moderately heavy 5mm hunting shaft without automatically ending up with an extremely heavy finished arrow.
- You want room to manipulate front-end weight.
- You like Easton's HIT component system.
- You hunt whitetail, elk or other big game and want a substantial hunting-arrow platform.
- You appreciate easier arrow removal from dense foam targets.
I'd Look at Something Else If...
- You want the lowest-GPI 5mm arrow possible.
- Your biggest priority is maximum speed and trajectory.
- You don't want an aluminum jacket that can permanently bend.
- You want the simplicity of an all-carbon shaft.
- You're intentionally building an extremely heavy arrow and actually want the higher GPI of the traditional FMJ.

I think the FMJ Max makes the most sense when you already understand why you want an FMJ but don't want all the weight of the traditional version.
That's really the story of this arrow.
You still get the carbon core, aluminum jacket and 5mm HIT component system, but the lower GPI gives you more control over the finished build.
You can preserve more speed, add front-end weight, or find a middle ground between the two.
The trade-off is that you're still dealing with an aluminum jacket that can bend, and the shaft is still heavier than a lot of all-carbon options.
So I wouldn't choose the FMJ Max because it's supposedly more lethal than everything else. I'd choose it because its construction and weight let you build the arrow you're actually looking for.
Get the spine right first, figure out where you want the finished weight to land, and build the rest of the system around that.
